Chapter Fifteen

Adam grimaced and shook his head. He knew he shouldn’t have said anything. Or maybe lied. Yes, he should have definitely lied.

“Wow. Just wow.” She looked him up and down. “Do you realize I could get at least two trail horses for that with some to spare? And you came to a ranch wearing it.” She shook her head and played with the strands of her ponytail. “How much are you worth, anyway?”

Adam’s jaw tightened. “That’s an inappropriate question, don’t you think?”

Faye gasped. “Oh my gosh, you’re right. Sorry. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”

It didn’t bother him, really. If she honestly wanted to know, all she would have to do was put his name in the Google search bar. Some of the top articles were about his billionaire grandfather leaving him everything.

Adam sighed. “I don’t want you to think of me any differently. Money does something to people. I’d rather you just think of me as Adam Tucker from Bolton Farms.”

Her features softened. “I can understand that.” She patted him on the forearm. “You’ll just stay that normal, boring city boy who works for a ranching company and until this week had never ridden a horse.”

“Gee, thanks.” Boring? City boy? Was that all she saw in him? The scales were tipped between them, then, because she was so much more than some dumb rancher.

“Oh, and let’s not forget his questionable sense of fashion. Who buys a seven-thousand-dollar outfit anyway?”

Adam shrugged. “I like nice clothes.” He picked up a small grey stone from the dirt and rubbed his thumb over it. “I’m not some boring city boy, you know.”

Faye smiled. “You don’t say.”

“I’ll have you know I’m as exciting as they come.”

Her eyebrow arched as she folded her arms. “Is that so?”

Pulling back his arm, he tossed the stone into the water. “Yeah. You don’t know the half of it.” He faced her. “And for the record, I think there’s a lot more to you too.”

Her smirk disappeared. Good, he’d caught her off guard. She needed to know he was serious. “Faye, from the moment I met you, I knew you were unique.”

“Adam…”

He held up his hand. “There is this drive I can see inside you and I’ve hinted at it in our past conversations. But really, you shouldn’t sell yourself short. And it’s not just that. It’s the way you carry yourself and command respect. You’re amazing, Faye.”

He watched with satisfaction as her face reddened. Reaching out, he grasped a stray strand of red hair and tucked it behind her ear. Her large, green doe eyes widened. He could be wrong, but she seemed to lean into him slightly.

Heart beating faster and blood rushing in his ears, he shifted his hand under her chin. He crooked his finger and tilted her face upward. “I think you deserve everything, and I want to give it to you.” He studied her, his gaze pivoting from her eyes to her lips. He licked his dry lips. It had been ages since he’d kissed a girl he actually liked.
